I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.

For me they are the role model for being alive.

Tuesday's Tasty Treat (#11)

Pizzle

piz·zle
n.
1. The penis of an animal, especially a bull.

It is also known, at least since 1523, especially in the combination "bull pizzle", to denote a flogging instrument made from a bull's penis - compare bullwhip.
Modern uses
1.
Animal consumption:
Pizzles are almost exclusively used/produced today as chewing treats for dogs. They are a fibrous muscle, and are prepared by cleaning, stretching, twisting and then drying. The result is a very hard, 80–100 centimetres (30–40 in) long brown stick, which is then sawed into pieces appropriate for the size of the dog.

2.
Glue:
The pizzle of a bull was commonly rendered for use as glue.[3]

3.
Human consumption:

In addition to being used as a dog treat, pizzles are also eaten by humans for their health benefits such as being low cholesterol and high in protein, hormones, vitamins and minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Pizzles for human consumption are prepared either by freezing or by drying. Scottish deer pizzles are thought to boost stamina and were used by Chinese athletes at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Pizzles can be served in soup, and if they have been dried they can be turned into a paste. Pizzles may also be mixed with alcoholic beverages or simply thawed (if frozen) and eaten. In Jamaica, bull pizzles are referred to as "cow cods" and are eaten as cow cod soup. Like many pizzle-based foods, cow cod soup is claimed to be a male aphrodisiac.

Stumpy has gotten a little fussy when it comes to chewies. For some reason there are unchewed rawhides, booda bones and other assorted chews all over the house. But the pizzles still hold her interest.

Twenty minutes later, she'd barely made a dent.

I traded the pizzle for her dinner, at that point. And I'll pick up some more of these when I go to town.

By the way, These were a generic no-name brand. You might be more familiar with the Bully Stick brand.

Where do you get your "generic" sticks? My dogs go thru rawhides in an instant. I need ones that last!!!

PS: I don't think I'll tell them they are from bull penises!!

Why is it that everything disgusting is thought to be a male aphrodisiac?

Never knew such a thing existed (for sale, that is...). Not sure that I will tell my guys about them. Also not sure why the thought of them makes me squeamish...

I got Sadie her first Bully Stick...and even a little larger than I thought she needed, trying to help it last. Nope, GONE in 15 minutes! They're too pricey for that...sigh.

I have never had one of these! I mostly chew on raw bones, or rawhides. My Mom buys me a rawhide that is about 12 inches long and its rolled like a cigar. It lasts for a long time because I can best chew the ends. So good!

But I will put a bully stick on her shopping list.

Kisses,
Stella

Well, we don't know what is wrong with the Momster, we don't get rawhide and we sure don't get pizzles. We need to do something about this.

I bet my kiddos would love these...thanks for the info (I think) ;)

Oh goodness, people eat those things too? I've watched the TV shows where they eat bull testicles in places like Spain, but didn't know that pizzle was on the menu too. Yeesh!

Marge actually prefers trachea and Achilles tendon to pizzle. Though she used to go nuts over them.

I suppose that's proof that no part of a deceased animal is wasted?

Sugar, Stumpy's too, now, for some reason!

Barbara, Big Lots, Family Dollar, or the Dollar Tree. Whenever I am close to civilization, I check all three. You never know what you will find, though.

Jan, hmmm.. I hadn't thought about that. Must be some man, says it is so!

Deb, I can relate to all your thoughts and feelings.

Gizmo, Bart and Ruby, you have good taste, too!

Kari, yeah, none in my soup either, thanks!

Donna, Bully Stick is also a brand name, it may not have been the pizzle you gave Sadie but another of their products?

Stella, I think these will help you burn some calories so you can have more treats!

OP Pack. Can't blame mom for being cautious. There's many dogs that don't get either for many different reasons!

K9 and Grace, Aw Buddy, that's awesome. When we get on the road maybe you and Stumpy can hook up!

ForPetsSake, the kiddos will thank me!

Sam, I can't watch those shows. Just giving Stumpy the pizzle creeps me out! One would think we would have trachea and achilles tendon here in beef county...

K9friend, that's gotta be a good thing, right?

That is absolutely disgusting!! I had no idea that's what a bully stick was. My dogs don't ever have to worry about getting on of those!! I don't think I could take to have bull pizzle all over my carpet!! BOL

SusanA said...

Whew, I'm with Kari and that number 3 picture is mighty scary..and by the way, isn't it amazing what you can get a man to eat if you can convince him that it'll increase his stamina? Good Lord. Stella loves those things. They can be a little pricey though so we traded for the occasional $.99 raw pig foot.

Wyatt said...

I can't imagine eating one myself...super gross.

We have to be really careful giving that stuff to the dogs...Stanzie especially forgets to chew and just tries to swallow stuff whole!

OOH, I found these super duper JUMBO bullysticks that take Emma and entire 45 minutes to go through! The regular ones are gone in 10 minutes usually. Charlie just hides them for later, but never actually gets to them. Long live the bull penises!

I luv my pizzle treats (someone should write a jingle about that ;) ) Mine used to last for days but I tend to devour them in a matter of minutes now. So, because of this and that they cost a bit of the green stuff (about $8 each here), I only get them on special occasions :( Yes, I'm droolin over your stash Stumpy. Maybe if I could restrain myself and savor them longer, I could have them more often? That's like asking me to save half my steak dinner for the next day. Not happenin Captain ;)

Waggin at ya,
Roo

PeeS: Interesting other uses for pizzle. Never knew. I do now though ;) Thanks pal. :)

Gotta love those bull pee pee sticks. I, myself, no longer get to have them because I eat them really fast and sometimes eat big hunks of them, but I remember the wonderful smell and feel of them. Oh I envy you.

Bully sticks are great but I wish I didn't know what they really were... Being of the male persuasion I gotta feel for my bull brothers... But then again, they are good.

Pee Ess - My mom says she would NEVER consume pizzle soup, hahahahaha

I'll never look at these the same way again!

Tucker, I think the PERFECT solution here is to get another small dog that can finish off your left over pizzle!

Khyra, Ask and you shall recieve! II know, it's funny when ppeople realize what they just held in their hand! I like to keep one around the house just for that purpose!)

Mayzie,Humans do all kinds of dumb stuff. This might be one of their smarter moves.

Booker, That's no excuse at all! Send her to the store, right now! You and Asa deserve pizzle!

24 Paws,I can't believe you're going to deprive those beautiful canines of one of life's simple joys!

Susan, yeah you won't be finding pizzle soup anywhere near my kitchen! Pizzle is availble in bulk, fairly cheap or at Big Lots (when they have it)

Wyatt's Mom, Wabbit was like Stanzie; compressed rawhide worked for him.

Lorenza, your mom bakes such good stuff, I wouldn't trade that for pizzle. 9Stumpy might, though!)

Ettel, Charlie and Emma, Stumpy likes the big ones, too!

Roo, I leave the pizzle jingle writing to you , but it would be a good one! Be sure you're getting the real thing! There's a lot of fakes out there!

Mango, you big dogs sure are deprived!

Pedro! Thanks for visiting! Hey! You'd eat a steak, right?

Sandra, hopefully you don't sepnd a lot of time looking at them. It's all I can do to get it from the package to Stumpy!

Twenty minutes and not a dent? Gotta find these!!

Very interesting about the pizzle. I find they are a little pricey so wonder what the mark-up is on them. Didn't know the bull whip was THAT, too. Yikes. :-)

Cyndi and Stumpy said...

Brenda, check out big Lots, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree

Helen, I don't buy the name brand so they're much more affordable. Only having one dog, makes a huuuuuuuge difference, too!

guess what guess what!! mama bought me 'n asa bully sticks today! we don't get to try them yet, though, cuz mama said they were gonna be our weekend treat. siiiiiigh.
