I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.

For me they are the role model for being alive.

Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain

My sister, Deb, suggested I read this book. She wrote, "Definitely put "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein on your list. Great book… you'll never look at your dog without wondering what she/he REALLY thinks…"

"The Art of Racing in the Rain," is told by Enzo, a mixed breed dog of mostly unknown origins. Enzo is a philosopher and bases his theories on what he's learned watching television, car racing and personal experience.

Because this is a story about life, more than a story about a dog or racing, just about anyone can relate to Enzo and his family. But, if you've had conversations with your dogs you'll love this story. Stein has crafted a story that holds your interest while inducing laughter and tears.

Enzo can tell you a little bit about his story in the video, below.

Just a few of Enzo's philosophies:
"The true hero is flawed. The true test of a champion is not whether he can triumph, but whether he can overcome obstacles-- preferably of his own making-- in order to triumph. A hero without a flaw is of no interest to an audience or to the universe, which, after all, is based on conflict and opposition, the irresistible force meeting the unmovable object."

“There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.”

“My soul has learned what it came to learn, and all the other things are just things. We can't have everything we want. Sometimes, we simply have to believe.”

It's rumored that a movie, based on the book, is scheduled for release in 2012 and will star Patrick Dempsey.

Our mom loved this book too, though she resisted it for a long time. She is a librarian and all the library patrons were reading it. She sometimes doesn't like the ones everybody loves, but it was great. Have you read Merle's Door?

This is one of the best dog books I've ever read. Enzo tells us in the beginning that he has had a great life so we are prepared. But the ending is great.

My mom read this book and LUVED it! She usually tries not to read dog books cuz the dog always seems to die in the end. But she said this one was different even though she cried. She said that the ending just brought everything full circle and was about how we touch each other's lives and how we live on even when we're not here in our bodies anymore.

Gosh, judging by your review and by everybody's comments, it looks like this is a must read book! I love dog books--and dogs in general...! I wonder if they have this on Kindle? I'm about to go look!

That will be a movie I will buy.
I have this on audio book but there are parts I can not listen to while driving.
And maybe parts I should not listen to while driving...

Just got it on my Kindle for $3.99 on an Amazon deal. Once my class is over in two weeks, I have a bunch of Kindle books to read and catch up on and this will probably be the first one on that list!!
