I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.

For me they are the role model for being alive.

While you're preparing for Memorial Day

and thinking of all those heroes who have given their life so we can enjoy the freedom and privileges that we possess in the United States, here's a couple more things to ponder.

Military Dogs Need Homes

There are some special requirements, because these dogs are highly trained. Military personnel and law enforcement programs and experienced handlers' applications are given priority. VSPA offers these tips when applying to adopt a military dog

As noted, in this article, applications to adopt retired military dogs has increased, exponentially, since the demise of bin laden.

Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pets, arrange foster homes for deploying military personnel.

Guardians For Soldier's Pets mission is to support "our Military, Veterans, and their beloved Pets to ensure the pets are reunited with their owners following a deployment (combat or peace-keeping mission) in harm's way to fight the global war on terrorism or unforseen emergency hardship impacting their ability to retain their pet's ownership rights."

I'm not in a position to do either, right now. But I sure can spread the word!

We've been researching this too. Some adoptions require the humans to pay to transport the dog home from the war zone. This seems very unfair to our heroic dogs.

Jan, a well bred protection/competition dog from a reputable training kennel (complete with health screenings) will cost upwards of $8.000. I don't think what the military is asking is out of line, to bring one home. There are dogs, already stateside, that are available, technically, at no cost.

Kari, Thanks!

rottrover, One day Stumpy hopes to have a retired military brother!

Carey, We're happy to have the privledge. Thanks to our heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice, those who made it home and those out there, today.

OP Pack, Nothing we do can express our gratitude, completely.

Rain, Well said!

I see you are still having problems commenting, even on your own blog! Yesterday was my day to not be able to communicate.
A nice Memorial Day "things to ponder."
My youngest Saint came from a young man who was deploying. His girlfriend, along with his daughter, said she could not commit to wait for him. So he was not letting her keep the dog either. She did turn out to be a high spirited dog for the first year, not suited to a young mom and baby. Still, it is my win and I would not give her up. Maybe she will settle in a couple more years.

Dogsmom, so sad, but for you the situation turned out well. Stumpy's 5. I expect her to settle any minute now...maybe I should say HOPE

yeah, blogger....pffffft!

Happy tails!

This blogger kerfuffle is really annoying. We've been having trouble for days trying to post comments. Mama's imagination for jumping though technological hoops trying to find a bypass is sorely limited.

Great post. Glad to see the military is finally trying to find homes for these wonderful dogs instead of destroying them.
