I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.

For me they are the role model for being alive.

Wizz, she's bad, huh?

Sam, if she invited him in it was only because she would have a better shot at eating his dinner.

Brenda, I was THRILLED!

Khyra, I am still considering sending her to etiquette school.

Norwood...step away from the computer!

I would come running inside for that dinner myself! Are you able to get him neutered now?

dogsmom, he's only just come through the door. Before I shut the door on him again I want to build some trust. I am open to ideas and suggestions though!

Hey he's inside!!! Or almost. You're getting close. :)

It looks like the girl worked her magic! Boom shakalaka, boom. : )

I think you are on the right path with him. You saw what happened when you shut him in before, so now it's got to be all about patience. I train horses, not dogs (mine are free spirits *smile*) but I know with the skittish ones it takes a lot of time for trust. You can tell when they are ready to make the next step. He has made a leap of trust, so be patient. Moving two soon sets you backward. At least with horses.

too soon, not twice as soon.

LWD, he is inside! He hasn't relaxed yet, but he's getting there.

Sandra, I think there are some similarities in training any animal. The berner seems to be more of a "prey" animal. he'd rather take flight. Building the trust is going to be RALLY important in getting him inside and comfortable.

I agree with your idea of trust building. I would give it at least a week of regular coming and being less skittish. Save the better cheese for the days before you are ready to help him move to the next step.
Of course you know you will miss him.

Dogsmom, thanks for the consensus. It really helps that other dog people think I am doing things right. I will miss this boy if he goes. Operative word being IF. He will never go to s shelter, not even a no kill. He just would not thrive in that kind of enviroment. He also won't be place in just any ol' home. I will have to be fussy if it's going to work for him and his saviors. I am hoping for a rescue and /or foster situation.

R,B&A, Every inch forward is exciting with this boy. And every step back words so deflating...
