I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.

For me they are the role model for being alive.

Coyote Stakeout (part 2)

A local newspaper recently stated, the local "coyotes weigh around 20-30 pounds and are found statewide, anywhere from the wilderness to inside major cities." The 'yotes Stumpy and I see, daily, appear much larger than that. I guess they could be coydogs, but they look all coyote to me. Here's one of the 30 pounders (not my picture).

I wish I had a better camera. We see one coyote, almost every night, that I swear to dog is bigger than a large German Shepherd!

We also have a mature 3 legged coyote that visits regularly. I wonder how this guy made it to maturity on 3 legs. I resist putting food out for him, because he tugs at my heart strings. He does however, help himself to the bird bath and quail food.

Stumpy makes the last check of the night, scanning the neighborhood for intruders.

All clear in front

All clear to the right

All clear to the left

Now that the neighborhood has been made safe once more, it's time to tuck in.

Hiya Stumpy!

Good you see you're keeping your family safe from them coyotes. We had a family of them where we used to live and my mom also swears they were as big as German Shepherds!

One morning, as she was walking from the front door to her car, the big pappa coyote was just sitting in the yard, watching her. She said it was a bit creepy!

I'll admit, I got a little scared when I heard them howling late at night. But I made sure to cuddle closer to my mom to let her know that I was there and not to worry (and NOT because I was scared!!)

Does Stumpy fluff her tail over her nose when she curls up in a tight little ball like that? Ruger generally does. We use him as a thermometer in winter - depending how cold it is affects how tight he curls up, and how much he tucks his tail over his nose!!!

Interesting to read this - we just say a giant Coyote hunting along the side of a highway here. Looked like about fifty pounds...Stumpy would not dig a chance encounter. :)

We don't have Coyote's over here. The biggest wild things are Foxes or Badgers.

There are loads of wild Foxes, since they outlawed hunting with dogs there are more and more.

Our neighbor got a picture of a coyote in their backyard a couple of months ago. She said it jumped right into our yard. Guess we are lucky the heeler's weren't out there...
Dad seems to think that Louie's Dad might have been a coyote. That is yet to be proven since he is quite the momma's boy..

Whew Stumpy you are most brave being on coyote watch. Mom use to see some around here- not so much recently. That 3rd legged one would tug at my heart too.

Sketcher, nice to have another ACD stopping by! The 'yotes give us the willies tosometimes, but we still love having them around!

Khyra, I will have to look KB up and check out their coyotes!

Annie, I do believe a heelers tail is a good measure of the weather! Stumpy definately uses hers when she tucks in on a cold night!

LWD, I remember the coyotes being pretty large back east. In the desert most critters seem to be fairly compact, due to the climate and available food sources. I don't see any coyote smaller than Stumpy though and she's 30 pounds most days.

Wizz, I have read some stories and seen some videos about foxes living right underneath the humans over there. Badgers are fierce! BE CAREFUL!

Heelers, I think that 'yote was lucky you weren't in the back yard!

Norwood, in Sterling we saw and heard coyote all the time!
