Rescue Me Week Pupdate! Willie the Briard

but now known as Willie, has been adopted!

I posted Willie in honor of my sister, Pam's Birthday.

Pam immediately sent out emails to the Briard internet network .

She received the news yesterday.

"Last Wednesday Pam posted that there was a Briard in a high kill shelter in Los Angeles. I immediately inquired about him. Everything was going against this poor guy. The small Briard community here along with a small dog rescue in my neighborhood came together to help him. Some people that I do not know went to the shelter, took pictures, and sent them to Jane. He was a Briard Wannabe with cropped ears!!!! The odds were not good for him because AGGRESSIVE was written on his kennel. My daughter told me to post his story on Face Book which I did. There was immediate response.

There are real ANGELS in this world. A lovely lady came forward who already has two Briards and an Old English Sheep Dog and a cat. She didn't care if it was a Briard mix or that he had been labeled AGGRESSIVE. She went down to visit him on Sunday and found out that he was not AGGRESSIVE but just scared. The dog let her pet him, wagged his tail continuously, and even gave her a kiss! She found out that animal control had found him chained to a fence with only a 2' chain, matted to the skin, and covered with his own feces. He was malnourished and had been in the shelter since October 25th due to a pending court case. He had be labeled AGGRESSIVE out of fear when they went to chip him down. Although 5 years old, he probably was never groomed. With AGGRESSIVE on his kennel his chances of adoption were NOT good!

This ANGEL of a woman adopted him this afternoon. He will be picked up tomorrow after he is neutered. He will be going to a lovely home for rehab and loving care and then the ANGEL will find him a forever loving home.

BTW, one of the kind ladies on FACE BOOK named him WILLIE. Wishing WILLIE a wonderful future full of love and caring."

Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain

My sister, Deb, suggested I read this book. She wrote, "Definitely put "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein on your list. Great book… you'll never look at your dog without wondering what she/he REALLY thinks…"

"The Art of Racing in the Rain," is told by Enzo, a mixed breed dog of mostly unknown origins. Enzo is a philosopher and bases his theories on what he's learned watching television, car racing and personal experience.

Because this is a story about life, more than a story about a dog or racing, just about anyone can relate to Enzo and his family. But, if you've had conversations with your dogs you'll love this story. Stein has crafted a story that holds your interest while inducing laughter and tears.

For the second time, she allegedly ripped my camera out of my hands.

The first incident occurred in August of 2010. She was in a sit/stay while I was taking some pictures. She jumped at a rabbit and knocked the camera out of my hands. The view finder was partially smashed, but the camera was still usable.

Saturday, we were sitting in the car at Snickers' house, waiting for the gate to be closed so Snickers could come out to play. When Snickers came through the door, Stumpy could not wait for her release and barrelled through me, knocking the camera from my hands. This time the camera was broken for good.

She's claiming innocence and cites a history of harassment. I suspect if she's found responsible, the replacement camera is going to cost her many months of treats and toys and maybe another couple of weeks in boot camp.

I've actually been saving for a new camera, for quite some time. The purchase never makes the top of the priority list. I'm going to have to get something less expensive now.

What are you using? What do you like about it? What Don't you like about it? Any suggestions for a decent, under $200, point and shoot?

Mayzie's Rescue Me Week, Day 5: Veteran's Day

We couldn't let today pass without thanking the veterans of our armed forces and currently serving military personnel who sacrifice so much for the principles that make it possible to live in freedom.

With that in mind,

I'd like to highlight two organizations

that help our service men and women keep their dogs safe while deployed

Operation Noble Foster

and

Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pets

help to find soldiers' pets foster homes while they serve.

If you can't foster, perhaps you can search craigslist and kijii (ebay classifieds) for soldiers needing homes for their pets due to deployment. When I find a soldiers' pet in need I send them these two websites, with a note of gratitude for their service. I've received some great responses. Many don't know these organizations provide this service.

Today's search turned up
Major and and his sister Fayth

Both dogs are 9 years old and have been together their whole life. Their dad gave them the best of care and all the love one could imagine. Their owner was deployed and there was no place for them to go. He had only hours to find a rescue that could help. With the economy and foreclosures its not easy to be placed these days, especially being Rottweilers. They are big lovable babies in need of a forever home. They do not have to be adopted together but if you have room in your heart and home that would be great.

Bernie and Beau are Bernese Mountain Dog brothers, available for adoption in Gulfport, Mississippi through Lone Star Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue.

Beside honoring Maizie's Grampa I'd like to honor two of my favorite S'tars birthdays

(I am blessed to have 4 wonderful sisters and one amazing brother. They are all my favorites!)

by featuring dogs of their special breeds.

My sister Pam, whose birthday was yesterday, loves her Briard, Booker.

Briards are not a common breed. But there are those needing rescueing. desperately in this case.

There's not much information available on this guy. The fact that he's stripped leads me to believe he was in pretty rough shape at intake. The way that he's standing makes me think he may be a senior.

This pup is located at City of Los Angeles North Central Animal Shelter,

a high kill shelter in Cypress Park. He's available through LA Animal Services

My sister Deb's birthday is today. She has two chihuahuas, Moe and Molly.

Deb tells me that chihuahuas are not a common sight in shelters, on the east coast.

That is just the opposite, here, in the southwest. It seems to me that about every other dog you see is at least part chihuahua.

I scoped out the chihuahuas at Lied, a high kill shelter in Las Vegas.Their wards are adopted through The Animal Foundation. Currently, the Animal Foundation lists 75 chihuahuas available for adoption.

Meet Seth

Again, there's not much information. He's an adult, male and tri-colored.

Adoption fees for Seth include his first series of vaccines, neutering, microchip identification a complimentary five-pound bag of Science Diet pet food, and list of participating veterinary clinics that will provide a complimentary wellness checkup with your receipt.

For today's rescue I searched Dogs in Danger, a site where kill shelters feature dogs on limited time. Once again, I used the same criteria I use when looking for the fmaily member Stumpy and I will add to our pack, when the time is right.

The only thing Lauper and my search criteria have in common is the breed. He is a beautiful, young sheperd mix looking for your home!

Lauper is at the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Center (MCACC), a high kill shelter located in Phoenix, AZ. Lauper is scheduled for euthenasia within two days time. Because of the high intake, the schedule could change at any time. Any animal at this shelter can be euthanized after 72 hours, and many are, due to medical, attitude/personality/behavioral, breed and/or space issues.

Baby, it's cold outside

Stumpy and I are usually out the door at first light. Stumpy's usually the first one to the door. I may need some encouragement, but not much since I love the mornings. Sunrise took place at 6:57am. Normally we would have been out around 6:30.

7:22am

"Don't make me!"

At about 7:30, after I take a couple pictures she rousts herself

She just stood there and stared at me as if to say, "If you go out, I'll go out. But, you have to go first."

Then decided it was not yet time, better to just watch from the window

"What? you don't seriously think I am going out in that cold, do you?"

Finally, at 8:10

"I'm ready, now!"

But ONLY because I had put my shoes on.

By the way, at 7:30 the temperature was about 54F. With the winds gusting to about 20mph so the "real feel" was 49F. NOT that cold.

We haven't taken Theo, the RV, out at all except for a spin around the block. I still have to get her into the shop. When I know all systems are go, we can plan from there! I'm guessing that our first real excursion will be in January. We'll head south to Quartzsite, AZ for some warmer temperatures and the annual Rubber Tramp Rendezvous for a month-long 4 legged pawty and meet up with all the friends we made at last year's gathering.

ABC's "My Dog Is Better Than Your Dog" contest

Yesterday kicked off ABC's dog versus dog competition with Maggie, the golden doodle, (I dunno, she looks black to me) pitted against Ruger, the Australian cattle pup. Only one can dog advance from the first round.

It's too late to vote for a winner in yesterday's contest. But all this week dog's will be competing. You can vote for the winner in each round on ABC's FaceBook page I know, I know...another facebook deal... it just ain't right

Video raises doggy entrapment questions in Kingman

"KINGMAN - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office says claims made on a YouTube video about an Animal Control officer attempting to lure a dog out of its yard so it can be impounded are untrue...."

Stumpy and I live outside the Kingman area, but within Mohave County Animal Control's jurisdiction.

I know being an ACO is a really tough job. I also know that there are hundreds of feral dogs dying in the desert and numerous cases of animal hoarding occurring within plain sight. The county and the animals would be better served if the ACOs put some effort into those problems.

Was there really a need for this ACO to even get out of her truck?

What do you think?

I think the narration was over the top, seeking a hysterical response from the community and viewers. I think the video is not of a high enough quality to judge the ACO's actions. The case was dismissed in court, and according to Guardian Angels of Pets (GAP) the dismissal was due to the video.

I think ACOs should be out dealing with REAL problems and not harassing people whose animals are clearly well cared for. I think the owners of these dogs should invest in a better gate. The current gate is unsafe and asking for trouble.

"Alphie is WUNDERBAR!"

"He is one smart, active, happy little guy. He loves his toys."

"He is very loved and has many friends at the park."

"The cart was at Best Buy. They said if I can fit him in it, he can come inside. Well, good idea at the time. Alphie thought otherwise and jumped ship."

"He has completely rescued us... We absolutely adore him."

Alphie's mom and I talked on the phone the other day and for all he's been through, he is an unbelievably well adjusted dog. His separation anxiety is almost non existent. When he's left home his biggest crime is removing the cushions from the couch. He can be seen, at the window, waiting for the return of those he loves. Alphie loves kids and playing at the park with other dogs. He's allowed off-leash now.

I'll forever be grateful to our furiends in blog land who supported and encouraged me, throughout this journey; for the people at the Bernese Mountain Dog Club who networked to find Alphie this wonderfully loving home. And for Alphie's family, for opening the hearts and home to him, and for keeping me in the loop and connected.

I know that every day and every night Alf is living and loving happily ever after and dreaming the sweet dreams that every dog deserves.

Stumpy's summer, in review

We haven't done a lot this summer. Trying to save $$$, the gimps and the heat have kept us close to home.

Stumpy's stayed busy. In between her fly-catching exercises

Stumpy is still helping around the house, earning her keep

and meaty bones

We spend our evenings and early mornings watching and feeding the quail, bunnies and jack rabbits.

The cattle have visited a few times.

And we recently had two full days of pouring rain which caused the temperature to drop and the spiders to move inside.

This wolf spider is about the size of a silver dollar. Lovely.

With the drop in temperature Stumpy is once again thrilled to be going for rides.

All summer long she remained hopeful

And finally resumes her rightful place of Chief Navigator

Carefully, she scouts the road ahead for obstructions

(we're only going about 5mph on a dirt road when she hangs her head out the window)

She knows I rely on her expertise

When she's sure the course is set, Stumpy settles back in, to enjoy the ride

Stumpy and I are looking forward to outings to the lake, now that it's cooled off some! Stay tuned!

We brought Theo (aka Theodora, Dora the Explora or "THE ONE") home on Saturday. I've been attempting to create a blog post, since then but blogger continues to refuse to cooperate.

I have no idea when we'll hit the road, full-time. I am hoping for January but I need to replenish my savings so we have an emergency funds and a cushion.

As I said, blogger has been horrible, for months now. We still read your posts and comment when we can, when blogger lets us. At some point I'll probably open a wordpress blog :( and combine two of my blogs. I'll keep you posted. Comments are still closed, because I can't respond to your comments (ON MY OWN FREAKING BLOG; NOT EVEN ANONOMOUSLY!!!!) Spellcheck is not working either, so forgive any mistakes, please. Maybe I should say anymore than usual.

Bored, Boring and Gimpy

Stumpy and I have been a little gimpy lately. Stumpy, with her luxating patella and I with my various issues. That makes us boring and bored.

She's always looking at me, as if to say, "Let's go!"

Also, the ongoing issues with Blogger, YouTube and Google have sucked the fun right out of blogging. Even when my hands are able I, oftentimes, can't comment. I have to log out of Blogger to use Google or YouTube. I have to log out of Google, to use Blogger or Youtube and I have to log out of YouTube to use Blogger or Google. In other words, I can only be logged in on one of these websites at a time.

On top of that, I can't upload a picture to blogger about 50% of the time. In spite of the fact that blogger says it's "done" the picture doesn't show up. Doesn't matter which format, html or compose, I use. Or how many times I upload.

Blogger/Youtube/ Google could care less about these issues.

Please know that I am reading your blogs, in spite of my inability to comment.

It's been almost a year since Alf went to live the good life in Laguna Beach. I hadn't heard from his mom in quite some time and was a little worried; not so much about Alf. I knew his beautiful sister Sophie had undergone surgery in December for a torn ligament and was more worried about Sophie and Alf's mom.

Sophie joined her brother Einstein and our loved ones over the bridge shortly after her surgery. Alf's done his best to comfort his mom and keep her warm.

I extend my deepest sympathies to Alf's family. And hope the the joy Sophie brought to your lives will help heal the pain of loss. (Alf's mom doesn't read blogs, but if you leave condolences, I'll be sure to forward them to her.)

Run free, sweet Sophie! I know Einstein is there for you and has a great Bavarian chef that knows all your favorite treats.

Alf navigated a road trip to Oklahoma where they spent the winter.

And took frequent breaks in the comfy area, set up to meet his every need.

They visited with his 2-legged sister who attends school, there.

Alf commandeered the most comfiest sleeping places (a desert dawg, no more!)

He continues to charm everyone he meets. He loves his stuffies!

Alf's as handsome as ever, if not more so.

Stumpy's neglected

Dirtville is a sprawling community tied together by a series of dirt roads. Locals accurately describe the roads as washboards. They are bumpy, to put it mildly.

Speaking metaphorically,Stumpy and I have run into a few bumps in the road, recently. Poor Stumpy has been left home way more than we would like. Things are almost back to normal. It may be another week or so before we can get back to reading, commenting and posting.

Many thanks to those who have checked in! Knowing we have been missed brought much needed smiles!

Stumpy's friend Baby did come over to visit one day. Stumpy was happy to see her. Baby? Not so much...

Stumpy IS one!

The trashy trailer next door has been (thankfully) vacant for over a year. Two weeks ago we noticed some activity and before long we had new neighbors.

Stumpy insists, that although she doesn't go over there, it is part of her kingdom. She wasn't happy and let the interlopers know it every time she saw them. Not being very brave, she preferred to let her opinion be known from the deck.

Since her return from boot camp, Stumpy has been on her best behavior. There are only few things that will tempt her to leave her yard: chasing a coyote, or a feral cat and visiting with other dogs. I don't leave her much opportunity to actually do any of these things, however.

The other day the new neighbors appeared to be fully moved in, now with dogs. Stumpy can't resist the idea of a new friend.

She's snuck off twice, to go visiting, when my back was turned.

Poor girl, she's on restriction, again.

And she ain't happy.

Typical of dirtville, we just heard our new neighbors now have 9 puppies... Arizona is a hot bed of raging parvo and distemper epidemics. I asked the new neighbor if her dogs vaccinations were UTD. Silly me. What was I thinking? We don't vaccinate or spay/neuter dogs in dirtville...

Please join me, at 3pm Local time, in a "National Moment of Remembrance'' . This memorial observance represents a simple and unifying way to honor those who have sacrificed everything and commemorate and honor the struggle to protect our freedoms.

Then, take just another moment to remember our men and women who fight, today, to protect our freedom; and the families who have made the sacrifice with them.

Moment Of Remembrance
In 1996, a humanitarian organization based in Washington, D.C., known as 'No Greater Love' conducted a survey on children and asked them why do they think there is a holiday on Memorial Day. It was agonizing to hear their remarks that were all associated with barbecues and extended weekend parties and celebration, while they hadn't the vaguest idea about the sacrifices of the soldiers in whose honor it is celebrated. One of the children was even quoted as saying that this was the day when swimming pools open!

Thus, the organization came up with the idea of 'National Moment of Remembrance' to remind and especially, let the future generations know about the real meaning of the holiday. The idea clicked with the President and Congress and since 1997, it became a standard American tradition. National Moment of Remembrance requires everybody to keep silent for a minute, exactly at 3.00 pm (local time) when 'Taps' is played and reflect on the glory of those who have shed blood for us. The federal government hopes to raise public awareness about the heroes and their valor by introducing this moment.

Guardian Angels For Soldier's Pets, arrange foster homes for deploying military personnel.

Guardians For Soldier's Pets mission is to support "our Military, Veterans, and their beloved Pets to ensure the pets are reunited with their owners following a deployment (combat or peace-keeping mission) in harm's way to fight the global war on terrorism or unforseen emergency hardship impacting their ability to retain their pet's ownership rights."

With the temperatures heating up in the desert, pooooooooor Stumpy is being left home, more frequently, in spite of her being a service dog. I'm not comfortable making her walk on hot black top AND it's been quite sometime since I have required her services.

Monday Memories: Demian (1971 - 1984)

aka Pee-Dog (After sticks, peeing was high on his list of priorities. Peanuts were his most favorite treat in all the world.)

Demian was my first dog, after leaving home and graduating from college, in 1977. He found me when he was 6 years old and I was living on Cape Cod. It was love at first sight for both of us.

I posted flyers all over West Dennis, West Yarmouth, and South Yarmouth and his owner came to claim him.

Three weeks later, his owner returned him to me, a bag of bones. Demian refused to eat. We were inseperable, for the next 7 years. The stories he could tell and the adventures we shared, from coast to coast, amaze me to this day.

He was my own personal Rin Tin Tin and came to my rescue, more than once. I never doubted he would lay down his life in order to save mine.

He was an extraordinary puppy raiser. Below are a few of his protege.

Normally, I can barely get an OK out of my mouth before Stumpy inhales her food. Since Fenway went home, and there's no race to the breakfast/dinner bowl, eating just doesn't seem to be worth the effort.

So guess what little girl? Now you're on restriction, too! No treats, no meaty bones, no pigs ears, no chews until you eat your dinner!

*We go through this, everytime Fenway visits. Not to worry, Stumpy is eating, just not with her usual attitude.

Stumpy and Fenway's surprise

Where are we going? Where are you taking us?

We're here! Beautiful Lake Mead!

Stumpy and Fenway made a new friend, immediately! Sky, a beautiful plott hound girl, was recently adopted from a local shelter.

This was Sky's second trip to the lake and although she got her feet wet, her owner said she didn't want to swim. I told him a little friendly competition would probably fix that.

And it did. Sky was swimming like a champ, in no time.

OK, you two! I want you to swim and chase balls until you can't move!

And they did!

Back in the 80's Lake Mead was my playground. Once the weather warmed up we were out here all the time. You could pull your vehicle up to the water's edge and set up camp. Back in the day, the water came up almost to the road pictured below.

In this picture you can see the white water line on the rocks. 20 years ago, just the tops of those rocks were visible.

Fenway is my only grand-dog. When he comes to visit, after a few short sessions of boot camp, to remind him of the rules, he is spoiled rotten throughout his stay.

I think he was a little surprised and perhaps dismayed when he was asked to help Stumpy with her chores.

There were two empty peanut butter jars that required immediate attention. Since Stumpy is a Union Dawg, She's only allowed to clean one peanut butter jar a day.

Fenway was willing to give bottle-washing a try

But failed, miserably.

Stumpy, being a dedicated employee, picked up his Fenway's slack (on over-time, of course).

Stumpy continues to wait

My laptop was infected last week. (I've been humming "Instant Kharma" for over a week, now.)

Stumpy's been pretty patient while I've attempted, over and over, to remove the viruses and malware. I haven't been totally successful, yet. I have gotten rid of everything, but the laptop is not running correctly. It's a work in progress and one that I will probably have to take to an outside computer whisperer. Grrrr!

Brussels Sprouts???

Stumpy loves her greens. She's very fussy though and mostly she only loves grass and bamboo. In the spring, I would hand pick the baby bamboo leaves because they're red and neither she (or Wabbit) believed red vegetables were edible.

When we lived back east, part of every day, in season, was spent grazing. In Dirtville, grazing is a bit of a challenge. I've tried them all and Brussels sprouts are all she likes (Wabbit loved them, too.)

Unlike most treats, Stumpy did not search out and eat every last crumb (or leaf, in this case)

Yesterday, the computer was infiltrated by a virus. I'm sorry if we didn't make it to your blog!

Frequently, strange dogs pass through our yard. Most don't stop to visit because Stumpy fools them with her bluster and charge. This guy wasn't phased, in the least. He stopped to say hello with his buddy. They're new neighbors and live down the street. Unlike most, they seem well fed. They escape their fenced enclosure every once in awhile.

His buddy took off as soon as I came out, and this guy followed right along. Five minutes later their owners drove up the street in pursuit and returned, a few minutes later, with the dogs in the cab of the truck.

I know Stumpy wishes they would have stayed to play. I'm happy these two have a family that loves them. But if we could get one of those skinny ferals to hang out, I wouldn't be sad.

It is also known, at least since 1523, especially in the combination "bull pizzle", to denote a flogging instrument made from a bull's penis - compare bullwhip.
Modern uses

Animal consumption:
Pizzles are almost exclusively used/produced today as chewing treats for dogs. They are a fibrous muscle, and are prepared by cleaning, stretching, twisting and then drying. The result is a very hard, 80–100 centimetres (30–40 in) long brown stick, which is then sawed into pieces appropriate for the size of the dog.

Human consumption:

In addition to being used as a dog treat, pizzles are also eaten by humans for their health benefits such as being low cholesterol and high in protein, hormones, vitamins and minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Pizzles for human consumption are prepared either by freezing or by drying. Scottish deer pizzles are thought to boost stamina and were used by Chinese athletes at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Pizzles can be served in soup, and if they have been dried they can be turned into a paste. Pizzles may also be mixed with alcoholic beverages or simply thawed (if frozen) and eaten. In Jamaica, bull pizzles are referred to as "cow cods" and are eaten as cow cod soup. Like many pizzle-based foods, cow cod soup is claimed to be a male aphrodisiac.

Stumpy has gotten a little fussy when it comes to chewies. For some reason there are unchewed rawhides, booda bones and other assorted chews all over the house. But the pizzles still hold her interest.

Twenty minutes later, she'd barely made a dent.

I traded the pizzle for her dinner, at that point. And I'll pick up some more of these when I go to town.

By the way, These were a generic no-name brand. You might be more familiar with the Bully Stick brand.

Wabbit's been on my mind more than usual, lately. And the Monday Memories, of Princess Dakota, at the OP Pack's home in blog land clinched the deal.

It's been over two years since my Wabbit-boy went on without me. He and I got sick in the same time period. As a result, I will always feel I wasn't there for him, the way he was ALWAYS there for me.

I credit Wabbit with Stumpy's recovery, too. Strangely enough, Wabbit, who didn't have the desire to get along with any other dog, decided Stumpy could be his buddy. It was Wabbit who showed Stumpy how to be a dog and gave her the courage to go places and do things she had previously been unable to face.

Red Dog - The Movie

Based on the book by Louis de Bernières, the movie, "Red Dog," is the legendary true story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master.

Koko, an Australian Kelpie, beat out the competition for the role. The video below, demonstrates Koko's worthy talents.

Although I can't find a release date for this movie, it premiered in LA, recently.

Last week we crossed the dam, into Nevada, to take the RV we had looked at earlier for a coach, chassis and drive-train inspection. The Shasta will not be our home on wheels :(...
This has really knocked the wind out of my sails. I thought for sure this was it. The never-ending, all-consuming search was FINALLY at an end.

We're OK, now. But I was really expecting to drive that baby home and start packing.

Things that go bump in the night ...NO BULL!!!

Last night all was quiet and very dark, when suddenly every dog within hearing distance sounds the alarm. Including Stumpy. Now Stumpy is not much of a barker, so I figure something must be up. I look out the window and see three shady characters out by the road, just beyond the visibility provided by the crime light.

Calling 911 out here in dirtville doesn't do a lot of good. The closest station is 50 miles away. I want to go out there and yell at them, tell them to get the @#$%^&* outta here! I'm about to pick up the phone. I know inside, with the doors locked, is the safest place. They start walking up the driveway.

There were three of the biggest bulls, I've ever seen. I snapped a quick picture and went back inside. I didn't want them joining me on the deck.

I'm doing lots of cleaning around here, in preparation, for our life on the road. Included, is the cleaning of my laptop. I'm always running across things that I want to share and I save them. Here's a few.

Our trash is picked up on Tuesdays. Stumpy lets me know, with her mad telepathic skillz, about an hour before he arrives.

She moves closer to the door in an effort to escape the mayhem. Her piercing and laser-like gaze warns me we may die, if we don't get indoors NOW!

The knowledge that we may not live to see another day, weighs heavily.

One last effort to get the door open before the arrival of the murderous trash truck. Telepathy has worked, in the past, to get the door open.

Not quite safe, but it will have to do.

It's Wednesday. We've lived through another attack.

I decided to turn the envelope into a "Stimulating Stumpy" opportunity and stuffed it with her favorite chicken jerky.

You may remember that on January 26 Stumpy was honored to be inducted into the "Would Have Made A Great Carny Dog" on the Carny Dog FaceBook Fan Site. Susan, Stella's personal assistant has posted some great pictures of Elite Road Dogs. You should check it out!

I found Susan and Stella a couple years ago,I think. My insatiable appetite for discovering/traveling America led me to a series of her photos documenting all things Carny. I've since discovered her interests are not limited to dogs and the midway. Susan documents threads of American life through her photography and writings. Pitcherlady, is a good place to start, if you're interested. I'd be hard pressed to attempt to define Susan's work. She's conscious. She's aware. She's paying attention and she cares!

Over the last 24 hours the weather in dirtville has been unpredictable. We've been blown to smithereens by high winds. It's rained cats and dogs.

Last night we had hail, for hours. The hail stones ranged in size from pea-sized stones to golf balls. It made for a dangerous last walk, and Stumpy was not thrilled (and she didn't do her business, either.)

The thunder roared and the lightning lit up the sky for hours.

Stumpy has still not recovered from the thunder storm we barely lived through in Kansas, this past summer.

This morning Stumpy had to do her doga, in the snow.

... The REAL reason we were in Nevada

After we left the dog park we went over to our friend and blogger Paula's house. Paula has a friend who is selling their RV and it sounded very promising. So, from there we went to see what could turn out to be Stumpy's new house on wheels.

We loved the RV, but will get a couple of inspections, one for the chassis and one for the "house" before the final decision is made. You can read more about it here, if you wish.

While we were there, Stumpy thought she would take a dip in the pool. Sorry! No pictures because I went into an instant panic. Not expecting her to go swimming, I hadn't shown her where the stairs were and her newly developed sense of independence kept her from listening to me (see previous posts with regard to boot camp) No, I didn't have to go swimming. She finally decided, after swimming in circles, that maybe the best plan WAS to listen. There's a lesson there, Miss Bratty!

Paula's friend has a regular little farm complete with chickens, a goat, a pig, and three horses; two of which are minis. Stumpy turned into ranch dog supreme and proceeded to attempt to herd the horses. When the full-size horse decided she wanted Stumpy dead, we called her away from the horses.

Next, Stumpy had a little visit with the goat. The goat was in no mood to play.

I was cheering for the goat, just so you know.

To Stumpy's credit, she did at least look at me when I called her.

Paula, by the way, runs the Huppie Syndicate, a horse rescue dedicated to giving abused and neglected horses love, training and a chance for a wonderful life. The horses below are available for adoption to a wonderful home with references and the ability to care for these gorgeous animals.

I don't know who Stumpy knows, but who ever it is must owe her, BIG TIME! There was no boot camp today, either. Instead, she went with me to Nevada where we had several things to take care of.

First things first. Of course, the dog park was at the top of the list.

Stumpy had another visit with her ol' friend, Biggie the dog.

Stumpy cleverly avoids boot camp,

Naturally, she won't let me look at it. She's horrible about her feet and has to be tranquilized just to do her nails. Funny thing, though, normally she's a real foot licker if she has a thorn or anything in or on her feet. There is no licking or cleaning of the feet going on now and she can be obsessive about that.

PLUS, she doesn't squeal or show any adverse reaction at all when I do touch it, except to be a total squirming P.I.T.A. AND she's perfectly willing to give me her paw, if there is a treat involved.

She went so far, in fact, as to not even leave the deck, all day. Not even to do her business.

Suddenly, at about 5 pm, when it was really too late to do anything, she was instantly cured. Ready and raring to go.

Very clever, indeed.

Sunday with Snickers

Stumpy was given a day pass, yesterday, to visit her friend Snickers.

We had hoped Snickers would provide some good, positive influence to aid in Stumpy's rehabilitation.

While we were away, Stumpy succumbed to peer pressure and fell in with a bunch of thugs.

Stumpy has been fingered as the ring leader, and is now on lock-down. None of the other dogs are talking, though. And as noted in the video, the most damning piece of evidence has been lost.

Stumpy's under house arrest, wearing a collar and leash, until boot camp begins. Her treats are also being withheld until further notice.

While we were in Quartzsite, I couldn't watch or upload any videos due to constraints on my data/air time.

The video below is a mash up of our 3 weeks,ummm, un-camping. (You can't really call a house on wheels camping, can you?)

I was really amazed by all these dogs' ability to get along; most especially by Stumpy who is known to be a little bitchy and fakes being an alpha type dog in order to convince other dogs not to mess with her.

Watching all these dogs (there were at least 12, at one point) interact, tumble and play, sneak, steal and pillage (next post) made for a great time! Being with a bunch of dog lovers who could only laugh at their antics made that time even more memorable.

We miss all of you!

We're back at Kuzzin Fenway's house now. Doing some laundry, grocery shopping and cleaning the RV. We should be back in dirtville tomorrow. :(

Snickers, a friend of Stumpy's from Dirtville, came to visit on Wednesday, with her pawrents. They brought lunch and cookies!

Snickers fit right in with the rest of the pack. Rain welcomed her with open arms.

Stumpy is going to be so lonely when return to dirtville next week. She's been allowed a lot of slack these past few weeks and it shows. Don't tell her, but when we return to dirtville there's going to be a refresher course in obedience beginning with a lock-down boot camp.

Before that happens she will have another couple of days with Fenway.

At only 7 months old, Rain is passionate about recycling. She tried, for hours, to encourage the other dogs to recycle with her.

Dog Foster Mom has been looking for a home for Ziggy for over a year, now.

Stella was late to the party so I don't know anything about her except she fit right in.

Heidi (1 year old, from Florida and always on the move! I swear i will get a picture of her beautiful face!)

And Rain, 7 months old and she's been on the road and everywhere from the time she was weaned.

Rain and Heidi are true party girls. Every time the pawtiers settled down, one of those girls would get a second (third, fourth, fifth, sixth....) wind and it would start all over again.

Especially fun, was Stumpy getting a taste of her own medicine, playing with Rain, who instinctively, knows the same dirty cattle dog tricks!

Rain has yet to learn the art of the stink-eye!

Home is where your chair is

Of course we brought one of Stumpy's chairs!

Stumpy had a rough ride down. The rig is a 1975 model, so pretty noisy to begin with. Add things falling out of storage and pots and pans clattering in cupboards. Well, Stumpy didn't get a wink of sleep the whole way down. As soon as her chair was set up, and we had a walk she made herself right at home!

We're in Quartzsite, Arizona for 3(ish) weeks, boondocking in a borrowed RV. I am camping with a group of Rubber Tramps.

Quartzsite is known as the snowbird capital of the world. It begins to transform in November. From a sleepy, desert town to a metropolis booming with RV's.

We're camped on BLM land, where camping is free but you/your vehicle should be self-contained. Many of the people I am here with have been doing this for years. Their vehicles are tricked out with the latest technology to survive, full time, off the grid. I hope to be joining them within the next year. It's one of the reasons I ended up in Dirtville.

You can see RV's dotting the land scape in this photo. We're about 7 miles out of town. The closer you get to town, the more congested the camping gets.

There's some fool parked about an 8th of a mile south of me with a bright blue strobe light on a 20-30 foot pole. What the hell is that about?

Anyways, it's supposed to get to 72 degrees here tomorrow. You'll find Stumpy baking in her chair, no doubt.

I'm on battery power, so my time on the internet is limited. I hope to keep in touch over the next couple of weeks. I run my generator in the earlier hours of the day to charge the house batter, my phone and laptops. The object is to not run out of stored electricity before bed. No solar power or storage in this unit. But you can bet there will be in mine!

We're still at my son's, in Nevada. We'll be leaving for points south, today. We were slightly delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. We don't mind, though. We like hanging out with Fenway. Oh yeah, and my son.
